Chartering a yacht is surely on everyone’s bucket list - a dedicated expert crew, gourmet dining at all hours, an abundance of the latest water toys and access to secluded destinations only possible by passage at sea.

But for first-time charterers, the true cost involved can be somewhat confusing.

The advertised rate is just the beginning, and unexpected fees can quickly escalate if you’re not prepared - for a seamless booking experience, here’s what you really need to know to avoid any surprises.

The Base Charter Fee isn’t the Total Rate

The weekly charter rate you see listed includes the yacht, the crew and standard onboard amenities.

Operating expenses are charged separately through an APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance) and are typically 25-40% depending on the vessel.

This is effectively a deposit to cover the cost of fuel, food, drinks, port fees and any additional extras requested in order for the crew to prepare for your charter.

The balance is usually settled at the end of your experience with the Captain and any remaining funds are returned to you.

Account for VAT

European charters often incur VAT, additional to the base fee - in France this is 20% (sometimes reduced for itineraries around international waters), in Italy expect 22% whilst throughout Spain 21% is applied.

Greece and Croatia attract the lowest amounts of VAT at 13%, and this is sometimes reduced for the former, if you’re chartering for longer or on a certain type of vessel.

Outside Europe, tax policies vary.

For example, in the Bahamas you'll pay 14% tax, whilst throughout the Caribbean it’s often 0%.

Delivery + Redelivery Fees

Every yacht has a home port (sometimes more than one if they relocate seasonally) and if you require the vessel to be repositioned from that location to start your charter, you’ll be responsible for delivery fees to cover the time and fuel needed.

The same rules apply if you’re planning on ending your charter in a different location.

Avoid these additional costs by starting and ending your charter where the yacht is already based or seek out special offers when vessels are repositioning for the season.

Port Fees + Marina Reservations

Berthing in iconic and popular marinas such as Porto Cervo, Sardinia and Port Hercule, Monaco will be unsurprisingly high - particularly in the busy summer months.

Premium berths require booking months in advance and perhaps a trusted relationship for priority access.

Combine famous ports with beautiful anchorages which are often more scenic, private and cost-effective, whilst adding some variety to your charter and an opportunity to utilise many of the amenities / spaces onboard to full effect away from a bustling marina and watchful eyes.

Crew Gratuities

While discretionary, crew gratuities are customary and a vital part of yacht charter culture.

We’d debate that the crew make the charter experience what it is and given the ratio to guest numbers, the service onboard usually surpasses many 5* hotels in terms of personalisation and taking care of your every wish.

In the Mediterranean and Caribbean, 10-15% of the base charter fee for exceptional service is the norm.

Fuel Costs Vary Dramatically

A superyacht cruising at 20+ knots consumes far more fuel than one gently island-hopping so bear that in mind when communicating your preferred itinerary with the Captain before departure, to align expectations and limit fuel spend if needed.

The use of water toys like jet skis, and requiring frequent tender runs ashore whilst anchored will of course increase fuel usage.

Special Requests Will Attract Elevated Costs

Yacht crews and Captains are the masters of sourcing pretty much anything you can think of for your charter.

Everything from a Michelin-level tasting menu and vintage Champagne to an impromptu beach party with live entertainment is possible - just expect additional charges for premium provisions and rush-fees for last minute requirements.

If possible, share preferences early so the crew can source items locally and suggest creative alternatives to elevate your experience without unnecessary markups.

Cancellation + Insurance

If you cancel close to your charter date, you may forfeit a significant portion of the fees.

Weather-related itinerary changes are also beyond the yacht’s control - around the Greek islands, this is particularly a factor so it may have an impact on any scheduled plans you have in mind during your trip.

Always secure charter-specific travel insurance for peace of mind.

How to Keep Costs Transparent

  • Work with a trusted broker who explains the contract and expected expenses clearly.

  • Ask for an estimated APA breakdown before your charter begins.

  • Be upfront about your preferences - the more the crew is aware of in advance, the smoother and more efficient your experience will be.

  • Plan your itinerary well to reduce delivery fees, fuel consumption and higher-tax cruising zones.

The Real Cost of a €100,000 Charter

Here’s a breakdown of what a 1 week charter in the Mediterranean might look like:

Base Charter Fee - €100,000

VAT - France at 20% - €20,000

APA at 30% - €30,000

Crew Gratuity at 10% - €10,000

Total Approximate Cost €160,000

A yacht charter should feel effortless where you’re able to relax, explore and indulge.

By understanding these hidden costs and planning with an experienced broker, you’ll enjoy the ultimate freedom of the seas without any unwelcome surprises.
